Silvana Montes

Jauja Burrito Catering

Biography

My Name is Silvana Montes, I am from Nayarit, Mexico.  At an early age, I started gaining work experience to help my family. I had the opportunity to help my mother and my great-grandmother prepare traditional Mexican dishes in large clay pots for town festivities. My great-grandmother Mother Maria, inspired my love for cooking and creating unique dishes.

In 1998, I got married moved to the US, and started my first job in the U.S  as a cook assistant at Scripps College. A few years later I was promoted to Cook Attendant, where I gained exposure to Italian, Mediterranean, American, and Asian Gastronomy. In 2014, I was promoted to Supervisor of Pit-Stop Café, in Pitzer College.

In 2017, after being blessed with many opportunities to grow in the arts of culinary, I decided to start my own catering and food services business: “ JauJa Burrito Gourmet Food – Catering Services”.  Jauja derives from the Nahuatl language, meaning a place of growth and prosperity. I knew this was the perfect name for my business since it connected me back to my origins. In 2018, I participated in the Small Business  Entrepreneurs Program at the Mexican Consulate of San Bernardino and the Business Management and Leadership Academic Program with NLBWA-IE where I gained additional knowledge to improve my own business. At the end of 2018, I officially opened my business and have been fortunate to provide catering services for events in renowned organizations such as Mission Hispana, Mexican Consulate of San Bernardino, Claremont Colleges, Unidos por la Música, and Latina Business Association. I also had the opportunity to provide services in settings like the convention center and community parks. In 2019, I was able to expand my business by partnering with Foothill Kitchens  LLC, in Upland, California getting access to commercial kitchens and a banquet room that accommodates 50 people.

As I  continue my journey to grow my business, I support community organizations like “Unidos por la Música,” in providing food donations for the community. I also continue supporting a women’s group for future projects and creating opportunities for other people to achieve their goals.

Achieving my dreams has not been easy, but I have been making great progress due to the ability to persevere and go forward. Having made the decision to follow my dream of becoming a small business owner has been a rewarding path that I enjoy as I get the opportunity to become creative in creating new dishes. I am grateful and honored for everyone who has played a role in supporting my business plan since the start and as I continue my path in the catering food industry.
