Lead Your Team: Small Business HR Summit

Small businesses often begin with a great idea and the enthusiasm of their founders. However, achieving sustainable growth involves much more than just passion and commitment. As a business expands, the complexities of managing a growing team become increasingly significant. This includes not only ensuring effective communication and collaboration among employees but also addressing the challenges that come with leadership roles and decision-making.

However, protecting the business becomes a critical concern. Small business owners must navigate legal requirements, financial risks, and market uncertainties that can threaten the company’s stability. They must implement policies and procedures that safeguard their assets and minimize liabilities, all while remaining compliant with local, state, and federal regulations.

Creating employment practices that benefit both the team and the organization is another essential aspect of sustainable growth. This includes developing fair hiring processes, comprehensive training and development programs, and fostering a positive workplace culture. Providing competitive compensation and benefits, along with opportunities for advancement, helps attract and retain top talent, which is vital for the business’s long-term success.

In summary, while a great idea may kickstart a small business, it is the strategic management of people, risk, and organizational practices that will determine its ability to thrive in a competitive landscape.

On August 12, the National Latina Business Women Association–Inland Empire (NLBWA-IE) brought business owners together for the Lead Your Team: Small Business HR Summit, a practical learning experience designed to help entrepreneurs better understand the human resources and insurance considerations involved in building a team.

Whether a business has five employees or 500, effective people management and risk protection are essential to long-term success.

Turning HR Challenges into Business Knowledge

Led by two experienced professionals, the summit provided attendees with real-world guidance on issues that can often feel overwhelming for small business owners.

Vilma Brager, Co-Founder and President of Insight HR Consulting LLC, shared her expertise on human resources and employment practices, helping business owners better understand the importance of establishing sound workplace policies and practices as their teams grow.

Krystal Hernandez, CEO of Somos Insurance Solutions, provided insight into business insurance and workers’ compensation—critical areas that can help entrepreneurs protect their businesses, employees, and investments.

The conversation focused on practical information business owners can apply to their organizations, including understanding insurance needs, strengthening employment practices, and becoming more proactive about workplace compliance.

“Many small business owners are so focused on growing their business that they leave themselves exposed to unnecessary risk or miss opportunities to save money by neglecting to review their HR policies, workers’ compensation coverage, or Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI),” said Krystal Hernandez, CEO of Somos Insurance Solutions.

Building Businesses That Are Prepared to Grow

“For many entrepreneurs, hiring the first employee represents a major milestone. It also introduces a new set of responsibilities. From employment practices and workplace policies to insurance coverage and workers’ compensation, the decisions business owners make today can significantly impact their businesses tomorrow. That is why education matters, said Vilma Brager, Co-Founder and President of Insight HR Consulting LLC

At NLBWA-IE, we believe that providing entrepreneurs with access to trusted experts and relevant business education is an important part of building stronger businesses and a stronger regional economy.

The Lead Your Team: Small Business HR Summit was another opportunity to put that belief into action—giving entrepreneurs the knowledge and resources to lead with greater confidence and prepare their businesses for the next stage of growth.

Knowledge Is Part of the Business Advantage

For Latina entrepreneurs and small business owners, access to timely, practical business information can make a meaningful difference.

Growth is not simply about increasing revenue. It is also about building systems, protecting the business, developing a strong team, and creating an organization that can operate successfully for years to come.

LEILA ™ AWARDS CEREMONY As the Inland Empire business community turns a new leaf in 2023, Latina-Owned businesses appear as resolute and valuable as a gold-spreading radiance that lights the path for future women entrepreneurs. The inspiration for this year’s LEILA Awards is taken from what is the most valuable and reliable; a ‘Gold Standard.’ Latina-owned businesses in the Inland Empire exemplify the qualities of pure gold recognized for their remarkable adaptability, strength, and relentless spirit and are formed through a transformation that requires ingenuity, grit, and a winning mindset. During the event, we’ll examine the findings of the most recent NLBWA-IE research study in partnership with UCR. This analysis focuses on the digital divide’s disproportionate impact on Latina-owned businesses, particularly the lack of access to media literacy in the Inland Empire region. The Latinas nominated are entrepreneurs that have demonstrated leadership and service to their community. We are thrilled to recognize these brilliant women in 3 categories: LATINA EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR AWARD, LATINA OWNED EMERGING BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARD, and LATINA OWNED BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARD.
